OUR EXPERIENCE IN RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM PROJECTS

Arı Design & Engineering is giving engineering, consulting and supervision services in rail transit system projects since long years.

Mr. Arsava, one of the share-holders of the company, has participated in the tendering stages of Ankara Metro, Ankara Light Rail, İstanbul and İzmir Rail Transit system construction contracts. He then managed the design and engineering works of the Ankara Metro Phase I at every stage of the construction between 1994 and 1997; he was responsible for the design of the civil and building services, for the coordination of the interface b/w civil and e+m systems.  Mr. Arsava took part in the acceptance committees following the completion of construction works.  From 1997 to 1998 he acted as consultant on behalf of the construction consortium. During this time he also worked together with SNCL (Canadian Lavalin Group) on the feasibility of the Alma-Ata Metro upgrading.

Bursa Light Rail Transit System I.Phase Project was awarded to a Consortium between Siemens/ Güriş / Simko / Tüvasaş in 1997.The consortium has nominated ARI as the Engineering Company responsible for all engineering of the civil and building services within the scope of the local partner, the coordination of the interfaces with electro-mechanical systems and the technical consultancy.  From time of the  project  start date which was in late 1998, up to commencement of operation in year 2002 intensive service has been given including preparation of technical reports, design and operating manuals and approximately 4000 preliminary and application drawings and consultancy services.  For the 1. Stage of the project including 17 km of 22 km track alignment ARI has completed the design of cut-cover tunnels, depressed open and at-grade line sections (excavation, back-filling, sub-ballast, ballast, sleepers, drainage system, cable ways, catenary mast foundations, separation walls), 21 passenger stations (excavation, supporting systems, architectural, civil, earthing, ventilation, heating, air-conditioning, plumbing, sanitary, fire extinguishing, acoustic and safety design in 16 at-grade, 4 underground and 1 half-buried stations).

Systems design of the five traction power substations and two drainage pump stations along the track alignment has also been prepared by our company.  The coordination of all engineering works of the two motor-way bridges crossing the line, operation and maintenance center with stabling yard for the vehicles, work-shop and office facilities were within ARI's scope of works.  ARI has supervised the design offices of the sub-contractors, reviewed and evaluated their detailed engineering documents.  ARI has set up an office at the construction site where his staff has supported the site activities, solved the daily problems and updated the drawings. ARI has also prepared the as- built drawings.

Bursa Light Rail Transit System is now in use and the passenger demand has already reached the targeted 40000 passengers/hour/direction. The project is awarded by the European Union as one of the "projects accomplished successfully".

ARI has further completed in Bursa the preliminary design, evaluated the soil survey and the geotechnical report and prepared the material take-off for the 5 km extension of the system including 5 stations, elevated trackway (railbridge), cut-cover tunnels, depressed open and at-grade line sections, two transformer sub-stations.  In case the Municipality decides to continue with the extension of the system, the detailed engineering services shall be provided by ARI.

Further to the Bursa Light Rail Transit System project, consultancy service has been given in 1999 to:

* Ankara Metro during the final acceptance period on the issues of drainage, acoustics and tunnel ventilation;

* Alarko on review and evaluation of the tunnel emergency ventilation and evacuation concept of the Adana Light Rail Transport System, (A summary of this study prepared together with METU is published the periodical "Fire and Security" no.49 March/April 2000)

In 2001 ARI DESIGN has completed the feasibility study for the 3rd Stage of the Ankara Metro. The feasibility report was supported further by passenger evacuation analysis and emergency ventilation concepts as requested by the authority (DHL); ARI has also prepared the design manuals as part of the construction contract on behalf of the construction company.

The very recent work on rail transit systems is the preparation of technical documents for a Turkish construction company pre-qualified to participate on the Krakow (Poland) Fast Tram System Tender. ARI has completed all technical documents (such as alignment plan and profile drawings, conceptual design of passenger stations, traction power sub-stations, emergency exits, driver's rest rooms, conceptual design of tunnel and station emergency ventilation systems, station and line drainage systems with fan and pump capacities, a re-arranged road junction with the proposed construction phases including the exposure of archeological foundlings). The offer was found acceptable from point of technical evaluation and also financial proposal. ARI is participating as advisor, consultant and verifier in the execution of design works.

ARI that was invited to tender of feasibility-engineering-consulting  for the Konya Light Rail System 2. Phase and has pre-qualified as the best technical bidder. The project is awarded to the bidder with a lower financial offer.

Our company has participated in Istanbul Bosporus Tube Tunnel project tender studies. ARI chosen as the local engineering-consulting group by the consortium Hazama-Penta Ocean-Yüksel Construction, has prepared preliminary designs of 13.9 km track alignment (excluding sub-merged tunnel) covering all stations, tunnels (cut&cover, TBM, NATM), at-grade, in-fill and depressed-open line sections, bridge works and electro-mechanical studies; further to the design activities ARI has also participated in preparing the technical and administrative tender documents. Our firm was notified as the "nominated local design consultant" to the Employer by HPY consortium.

In year 2004 the İstanbul tube crossing project is awarded to the consortium Taisei/Marubeni/Gama/Nurol.  The Employer has requested the verification of all the designs prior their submission to the Employer.  Gama/Nurol, the local partners of the consortium have proposed Ari Design and Engineering as the third independent design verifier for all design activities within their scope of work.  The Employer (DHL) and their Engineer (AVRASYA Consortium) have approved Ari's involvement as a "design verifier".  Mr.Arsava is the design verification engineer and with a team of engineers the verification procedure is proceeding.  The verification works are scheduled to be completed by end of 2006.  Civil designs of four passenger stations (three underground, one at-grade), one viaduct, two railway and one motorway bridge, cut-and-cover tunnels, retained cuts, fill and at-grade track sections, utility works, a sea-wall, ventilation structures and all excavation and temporary retaining systems are being reviewed and certified.

In 2005 Ari has signed a contract with Tekfen Engineering of İstanbul for the design of five stations along the track alignment of the Bursa Light Rail Transit System Extension Project.  The scope of works to be performed is the architectural, civil and building service design of five passenger stations including passenger connection tunnels and the access ways to neighbouring properties.
